It was not a woman but a man who invented the swimsuit in the middle of a controversy, it was difficult to find a woman who would wear it since it was considered a sin!
Did you know that it was a man who designed the swimsuit or also called a bikini? Let’s learn a little about the history of one of the most important garments for women. This was presented on July 5, 1946.
It was not easy at all since at that time women did not teach much , and a controversy broke out, there was not a woman who wanted to put it on due to the social judgment to which she would be exposed.
The society considered that piece (bikini) was too vulgar and sinful and it urged the libido . The creator of the bikini had to turn to a stripper to measure it. She was a dancer from the Casino de Paris.
The presentation was before all the media. In the 19th century bathing suits for women were introduced but these covered the entire body from the wrists to the ankles.
Women wore bathing suits covered from wrist to ankles
It was not to the liking of the women because when they submerged themselves in the water the suit became extremely heavy. So one day Annette Kellerman, an Australian swimming champion, was a versatile woman as she was also a writer and actress. She decided to design her own swimwear style.
This is how the one-piece design came about. This consisted of not having sleeves, or legs, and was very tight to the body. The price she had to pay for being so daring in those days was jail.
An athlete designed a sleeveless one and was imprisoned for daring
They took her to jail after she wore it in public in Boston. This led to the fact that models similar to those of this athlete began to be seen on the beaches of Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, women came to the beach in short but wide-cut dresses.
They were cotton or linen minidresses. They were so wide that you could not distinguish the type of body that women had. In the end, the dress was disastrous when going to bathe so the search for a new swimsuit was underway.
New materials for swimsuits arrive
From 1930 they began to use new materials for bathing suits, such as nylon and latex. Off-the-shoulder swimsuits began to be seen. At that time it was forbidden to show the navel.
In fact, as early as 1946, Jacques Heim developed a new model, this was two pieces, but believe it or not, he meticulously took care that the navel was not noticeable. He named it "atom" for being the smallest swimsuit in the world.
She was wearing the bikini. Why did they give her a BIKINI?
But when the BIKINI arrived, everything changed! It was created by an automobile engineer named Louis Réard, his mother had a lingerie store, and he came up with an exclusive design to show off the full body of a woman. His idea was brilliant and he was confident of the great impact it would and did cause.
He put a bikini on the garment because he said it was an explosive name. In addition to the fact that BIKINI was a place, an atoll in the Marshall Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, where the first postwar atomic bomb tests had just been carried out.
The print Réard chose was newsprint. Yes, the print on the first bikini imitated the letters and pages of a newspaper. So you already know the history of this peculiar garment important for every woman. Now let’s go to the beach!
