The baby was less than a year old and was diagnosed with covid-19, the state of Illinois announced to be one of the deceased so far
Officials from the US state of Illinois announced this Saturday the death of a child just a few months old from Covid-19 , a very unusual case among the fatalities of the pandemic.
At a press conference, Governor JB Pritzker said that "a baby" was among the people who died in the last 24 hours in Illinois as a result of the new coronavirus.
The state Department of Public Health said the boy, who died in Chicago, was less than one year old and had tested positive for Covid-19.
"Never before has there been a Covid-19 associated death of an infant," department director Ngozi Ezike said in a statement. "A full investigation is underway to determine the cause of death."
Pritzker said, moved by the news. "It’s especially sad for the family … for the years this baby was stolen. We should cry."
Last week, the general director of Health of France Jerome Salomon reported the death of a 16-year-old teenager in the vicinity of Paris.
"Severe forms (of coronavirus) among young people are very rare," Salomon noted.
In California, United States, also last week, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported that a teenager had died after testing positive for Covid-19.
But he stressed that the case was complex and that the cause of death could be another.
Multiple studies have found that the virus primarily affects older patients and those with underlying conditions.
The United States has the highest number of new coronavirus cases in the world, more than 120,000, although its death toll of around 2,000 is still far below that of Italy, Spain and China.
In the last 24 hours, more than 450 deaths of coronavirus patients occurred in the North American country. The baby who died in Chicago was among 13 deaths recorded in Illinois.
