HIV infections in Mexico tripled in millennials, a fact that implies that the aforementioned generation has lowered its guard against this disease
Despite the efforts that have been applied over the years to combat this disease, HIV infections in Mexico tripled in millennials , a sector of the population between 15 and 34 years old.
According to the National Registry of AIDS Cases of the National Center for the Prevention and Control of HIV and AIDS (Censida), in eight years the number of HIV-positive cases grew 2.8 times in young Mexicans between the ages of 15 and 34. , which in simple words means that HIV infections in Mexico tripled in millennials .
That is, while in 2018 there were 6 thousand 781 cases reported as HIV positive, sexually , while in 2010 there were thousand 789, that is, it is a growth of 284 percent.
The fact implies that the aforementioned generation has lowered its guard in the face of this condition that has claimed many lives over the years.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) noted that the adolescent population has low levels of knowledge about AIDS and specific risk behaviors such as sex with people of different ages and sex without a condom.
This makes them more likely to contract and transmit the virus.
From the first person diagnosed with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Mexico in 1983 to 2018, 203,312 people have been notified that they have this disease.
In the country, the entities with the highest incidence of diagnoses during 2018 were: Quintana Roo, Campeche, Veracruz, Tabasco and Yucatán.
One fact that should call attention is that according to the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF Mexico) 90% of women acquire HIV through their stable partner.
