The Imss doctor angiologist, Jesus Alejandro Armendáriz assured that women who are over thirty years of age are more likely to suffer from varicose veins
Jesús Alejandro Armendáriz López, an angiologist assigned to Hospital General Regional 1 of the IMSS, mentioned that women over thirty years of age are the most likely to suffer from varicose veins , this in a ratio of two to one compared to men.
A sedentary lifestyle, obesity, sitting or standing for a long time, as well as family history, are the factors that influence women over thirty years of age being more prone to suffering from varicose veins.
The expert also pointed out that there are risk factors that directly affect women such as pregnancy, the use of contraceptives and the use of tight clothing at the thigh, hip or waist level.
Pregnancies, the more the woman has had, the chances of suffering from varicose veins increase; the use of hormones such as contraceptives, as well as the use of tight clothing at the level of the thigh, hip or waist, since they create a kind of tourniquet that favors venous insufficiency
Dr. Armendáriz López, mentioned that varicose veins can also appear due to chronic venous insufficiency, which is due to valve dysfunction.
All veins, both superficial and deep, have valves that are arranged in the shape of an arrow and whose function is to prevent the blood from returning, that is, that the flow is atherosclerotic in the direction of the heart, then when these valves stop working properly , blood accumulates and the vein dilates, causing varicose veins
He added that all these affected veins occur mainly on the legs and can be divided into three depending on their size: the telangiectaceae, which measure approximately one millimeter and have a spider-like appearance; the reticular ones, between one and three millimeters and finally the varicose ones, which are larger and can be seen as bumps on the skin.
In his explanation, the specialist indicated that the main symptoms are heaviness in the legs and swelling, in the most complicated cases, a change in color in the affected skin, the appearance of ulcers and pain. He stressed that compression is the main treatment for varicose veins.
This disease is not cured, but its evolution can be stopped, the main recommendation is the use of graduated compression stockings or socks, which are tighter in the lower part and less in the upper part
It is important to exercise, lose weight if the person is overweight or obese, these three changes in lifestyle will decrease venous hypertension to a greater or lesser extent and in this way the disease will be controlled
